Introduction, Objectives and Guiding principles for Nitya Nivedan

Hello,

We have informally started a newsletter of sorts with the main objective of bringing Parivar kids together, introducing newer ideas, concepts etc. to them and keeping them up-to-date with happenings in the word. Also, they have lot to share and we wanted to provide an outlet to them.

It started out with a set of informal e-mails originating from me and Anandhi describing various topics including Jules Verne and his science fiction stories, Thomas Edison and his inventions, Temperature scales etc. We also attempted to engage kids by asking questions to which they can find answers by doing their own research. I think it worked well and engaged few of them nicely. We are expecting that most of the kids will eventually join in and become quite active.

We wanted to share this blog with you and gather your inputs and ideas. This blog is not open to public. We will invite each member individually.

Here are some guiding principles which we will follow:
1. 1. List of topics that we will cover:
o Introductions - We will also have an area to introduce individuals and their backgrounds (especially kids to introduce themselves)
o Math
o Science
o History
o Geography
o Arts
o Astronomy
o Current affairs (news items which can be easily understood by kids)
o Popular culture
o Technology (including Robotics and other technologies)
o Biology
o Chemistry
o Puzzles
o Competition (like we started with Photo contest)
o Architecture
o Humanity - including ethics, morals, integrity and honesty - teaching them good qualities
o Literature and Books and book reviews by individuals (also include poems - either written by kids or something that we may find from other sources)

2. We expect to publish a consolidated newsletter every two weeks with around 5 to 8 articles along with some activities and competitions (with prizes too!).

3. The articles will be individually published on the Nitya Nivedan blog for future reference.

4. All of these topics should be described in simple terms and annotated with photos, audio and videos.

5. We will have prizes for answering questions (not necessarily the first one to answer - that will be difficult due to time zone differences). One individual can get $10 gift certificate for each month (over two issues) for best effort and then $5 for the two second and third place candidates. We are still figuring out the logistics. We will sponsor the prizes.

6. The articles will be picked carefully in such a way that those are not easily accessible to them without somebody else pointing to them. Meaning, something that their parents or magazines that they generally read may not point them to that content.

7. We expect parents to submit ideas and articles. We will curate them and publish accordingly.

8. We are thinking of hosting a monthly phone (or better yet – video) conference where all of them can get together to talk. I am researching multi-party video conferencing and we will communicate that further once I have that figured out.

9. Of course the idea is to teach them something so the articles will be written to summarize the main idea to them.

What do we expect from you?
a. Encourage kids to participate and communicate. Get them e-mail addresses if they don’t have one and help them get connected online to view the articles and answer questions or just provide comments.

b. Provide inputs, feedback and encouragement to us. Your blessings are extremely important for the success of this initiative.
